Credit: The Antiquarian Society recently supplied funding for the purchase of this extraordinary pair of bronze-mounted Chinese porcelain vases by Applied Arts of Europe. The pair is among the finest examples of ormolu-mounted porcelain in an American museum, distinguished by outstanding quality and provenance.
In 18th-century Paris, porcelain was still a rarity and the deep red glaze of these imported Chinese vases would have astonished consumers. Dealers of luxury goods specialized in selling curiosities from around the world, which they often embellished in a distinctly French fashion. The form of these vases was dramatically revised for the Parisian market. The original elongated necks were cut down and the globular bodies sliced in two to create covers. The added gilt-bronze mounts, with their finely finished scrolls and naturalistic vegetation, play brilliantly against the rich severity of the porcelain. The mounts were likely designed by the renowned sculptor and goldsmith Jean-Claude Duplessis. Their provenance is as impressive as the vases are: owned in the 19th century by Alfred Charles de Rothschild, they descended in his family until they were purchased in 1975 by distinguished collector Juan de Beistegui where they remained until they were sold in 2018. With this gift, the Antiquarian Society has added another jewel in the crown of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Acquisition Details – The Hartwell Memorial Window
On October 9, 2018 the Antiquarian Society Board of Directors voted to contribute support funding, with a leadership gift, toward the Arts of the Americas department’s acquisition, “Light in Heaven and Earth,” a Tiffany Studios landscape window of many types of richly-colored leaded glass. The window was created in 1917 by Agnes Northrop, the principal landscape window designer at Tiffany Studios, and was one of the “most glorious windows ever produced by Tiffany Studios” standing 23 feet high by 16 feet wide.
Its placement in the Art Institute is the first object visitors will experience when ascending the prominent Woman’s Board Grand Staircase. Of the window depicting a distant view of Mount Chocorua, one of the peaks of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, it has been said, “it will become an immediate icon of the Art Institute and the City of Chicago, on par with the greatest works of the museum.”
Thank you, Antiquarian Society members, for your generosity! It is your commitment to the goals of our society which made this gift possible!
